Your generation, explained.
Generation Alpha
Born 2013–2024
A new chapter, still filling with firsts.
Generation Alpha follows Gen Z in our timeline. We use 2013–2024 for this calculator, although the boundaries are still debated. It is a group whose childhood stories are being written now: first friendships, favorite games, school projects, and discoveries big and small.

The bigger picture.
The Alpha name follows the Greek alphabet after the familiar X, Y, and Z sequence. This site begins Alpha after our 2012 Gen Z endpoint and ends it before the proposed Beta starting year of 2025. This is a disclosed site convention, combining definitions rather than following one organization’s complete timeline.
The span already contains distinct experiences. Someone born in 2013 turned seven in 2020; someone born in 2024 had not yet arrived. Reading the group’s history means noticing that spread, while leaving space for interests and memories that have yet to take shape.
What shaped this generation?
Touchscreens were already here
The original iPhone launched in 2007 and the first U.S. Wi-Fi iPad in 2010. Both predate our Alpha starting year, making them part of the surrounding technological landscape.
A childhood crossing 2020
The pandemic belongs to the early-life setting of older Alpha children. Later members of the range were born afterward, giving families different stories about that period.
A world worth investigating
Space missions, games, and everyday inventions offer starting points for curiosity. The timeline below records real events around these birth years, without assigning future interests or character traits.
A few moments
in the timeline.
The same moment can mean different things at different ages.
- 2013
PlayStation 4 arrives
Sony launched PS4 in the U.S. and Canada on November 15. It became one of the consoles present during this cohort’s early years.
- 2017
Nintendo Switch launches
The March 3 debut introduced a console that could move between television and handheld play, with detachable controllers for supported shared games.
- 2020
A pandemic changes the backdrop
WHO characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic on March 11. Alpha’s older birth years were still in early childhood.
- 2022
Artemis I travels around the Moon
NASA’s uncrewed flight test launched on November 16 and returned on December 11. It carried no astronauts.
The world around them
The game can come along
Nintendo Switch put its display and controls into a system that could travel. Its 2017 design makes a concrete comparison with older television-only home consoles.
Space photos for the scrapbook
Artemis I recorded a journey beyond the Moon and back. Its photographs offer a real-world companion to the rockets and planets in a child’s drawings.
A personal time capsule
Save the title of a favorite book, a drawing, or a description of a game invented with friends. These make room for childhood culture beyond commercial devices.
There’s more to the story.
Two common starting points
You will see both 2010 and 2013 used as Alpha starting years. That is why early-2010s birthdays can produce different results.
Twelve years in our timeline
The site’s 2013–2024 Alpha range contains twelve birth years, including both endpoints.
Parents do not determine the label
This calculator uses a child’s own birth year. A parent’s generation does not automatically assign the child to a particular group.
A few good questions.
Is someone born in 2015 Gen Alpha?
Yes. The year 2015 falls comfortably inside this site’s 2013–2024 range and McCrindle’s alternative 2010–2024 range.
Why does this site start Alpha in 2013?
It follows our Gen Z endpoint of 2012, also used by Statistics Canada. We separately adopt 2025 as Beta’s proposed start.
What will this generation be like as adults?
Its members will have many different lives. The useful facts today concern birth years and documented events, while adult attitudes and experiences remain an open story.
Keep exploring.
How we chose the dates and facts
We begin Alpha in 2013 and end it in 2024 for this calculator. McCrindle instead begins Alpha in 2010. The birth-year ranges on this site mainly reflect U.S. and English-language conventions.
