What comes
after Gen Z?

A straightforward look at Gen Alpha, Gen Beta, and the dates still being debated.

Hello, Alpha.
And now, Beta.

Generation Alpha follows Generation Z in the familiar naming sequence. Generation Beta is a newer proposed label for the group after Alpha. The names are easy to remember. The exact boundaries take a little more explaining.

The timeline we use.

Our calculator gives each birth year one result.

Generation Z

1997–2012

The generation just before Alpha in our timeline.

Why Alpha has
two starting years.

These are two different frameworks you will see in generation references.

Statistics Canada

2013

Its 2024 definitions place Gen Z in 1997–2012 and Alpha from 2013 onward.

McCrindle

2010

Its framework uses 2010–2024 for Alpha, followed by a proposed 2025–2039 range for Beta.

Born in 2011?
Here is the difference.

The birthday stays the same. The definition changes the answer.

In this calculator

Gen Z

2011 falls inside our 1997–2012 Gen Z range, matching the boundary used by Statistics Canada.

In McCrindle’s framework

Alpha

2011 falls inside its 2010–2024 Alpha range.

Choosing a definition makes a calculator consistent. It does not settle the wider debate. For early-2010s birthdays, we point out the alternative Alpha starting year so that the difference is clear.

A name is easier
to predict than a life.

McCrindle proposes 2039 as Beta’s final birth year. That belongs to its proposed framework; this calculator leaves the endpoint open. A tidy fifteen-year schedule cannot tell us what children will think, value, study, or do as adults.

For perspective, someone born in 2025 turns five in 2030 and eighteen in 2043. Much of their schooling, friendships, and working life lies ahead. Their story is still theirs to write.

About the dates and sources

Statistics Canada and McCrindle use different definitions for the youngest generations. The timeline on this site combines those conventions openly; it is not a single organization’s official standard.
